Review Tamron AF 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC LD Aspherical IF Macro Zoom Lens for Canon DSLR Cameras

Buy Cheap Tamron AF 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC LD Aspherical IF Macro Zoom Lens for Canon DSLR Cameras From Here Now!

With the advent of the latest 15X zoom lens from Tamron, the pioneer of high power zoom lenses, the high power zoom lens has steadily evolved from a 7.1X to a 10.7X to a 13.9X and now to the worlds largest zoom ratio of 15X by combining advanced high power zoom design technologies accumulated by Tamron since 1992. The lens covers an angle of view equivalent to that of a 28mm wideangle to a 419mm ultra telephoto with just one lens, letting the user capture once-in-the-lifetime images of panoramic landscape images or close-up pictures of children smiling, without having to get too close to the subject and without having to change lenses.

 "WOW" 2010-02-13

Got the lens and could not wait to use it. The zoom ring rotates oposite what I was use to. Somewhat heavy but the pictures were great. At full zoom the focus was a little slow but I can live with it. Great lens.

"Tamron 18-270 Lens - Very Good But Not Great" 2010-02-12
By P. Olivier (Tampa Bay, FL USA)
The many reviews I read about the new Tamron 18-270mm Lens were mostly very good so I took a chance on it, sight unseen. The reviews said it beats its competition in most every way. after using it for a while, it is a very good all around, consumer lens for amateur photographers that allowed me to take several lenses out of my camera bag due to it's wide range of focal lengths. I take landscape and close up nature photos and this lens serves me about 75 percent of the time. It focuses surprisingly close at all lengths. For macro photography I use a Canon 500D close focus filter and an extension tube. Photos are very sharp and are true macros, however, the lens is a bit slow with the extension tube attached. I always use a tripod and set ISO 800. I did my own test of lens sharpness by photographing a newpaper page taped to my garage door. I later examined the RAW files in Adobe Camera Raw at 200 percent magnification. At the very wide and very long settings I found the lens very sharp using aperture settings of f8 to f16. I did have one bad experience that I have yet to explain. I pointed the camera and lens at the sky and zoomed out from 18mm to 270mm. As I looked through the viewfinder I noticed what appears to be serious vignetteing at settings from about 180mm to 270mm. However, I took several photos of the blue sky at a series of different lens settings and did not find any vignetting in the photos.

I have only one complaint about this lens and its a big one: if you point the lens up or down there is serious lens creep in the zoom mechanism. There is no provision for adjusting the tension on the zoom control. So, if you point the lens up or down you need to hold it in place while you compose and take you photos. This becomes a really big issue for achieving maximum sharpness and when you are taking timed exposures. Since I do not regularly point the lens up or down at rather sharp angles this is not a major issue, but I expect better from Tamron quality.

 "NewToDigital" 2010-02-08
By NewToDigital
Although I am new to digital photograph, I have been involved as an amature to semipro in film photography for more than 40 years. My camera platform of choice is Nikon. I pruchased the Tamron AF 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC LD Aspherical IF Macro Zoom Lens for use on my Nikon D5000 body. I love the D5000's articulating LCD display.

My kids are competitive swimmers and divers so I shoot mostly indoors, at a pool, fast action, hand held, in low light. I shot about 1000 action shots with this lens; then it started to stick when pointed down and zooming from 270 mm back toward 18 mm. However, eventhough I was shooting in low light, at ISO 3200, shutter speed 125th of a second, with the lens wide open. Through the entire zoom range, the lens was great until it started sticking during zoom. Pictures were amazingly sharp for the slow shutter speed and high ISO.

But alas, a sticky zoom was unacceptable, so I exchanged the Tamron for a Nikon 18-200 VRII zoom and I am happy, accept I miss the extra 70mm of zoom. Picture clarity seems about the same, but I think the VC (vibration compensation) feature on the Tamron stabilizes the lens slightly better than the Nikon's VRII stabilization does. I could tell the difference in the viewfinder on action photos. How, by observing the camera shake reduction of the subject. I would guess the Tamron subtracted an extra F stop over the Nikon 18-200. This, to me, seemed significant at maximum zoom when filming 10 meter tower diving. I need all of the stability I can get.

I wish the Tamron's zoom feature didn't start sticking, I liked this lens, a lot, and, it was nearly $300 less expensive than the Nikon glass. By the way, auto focus seemed about as fast as the Nikon, at least when filming swimming and diving.

I would recommend this product with some reservation.

"I'm torn about this lens" 2010-01-25
By Jennifer Highfield (KC, MO)
I bought and use this lens for my Canon 40d DSLR. I've had the lens for about 6 months and its my walk around lens and rarely leaves my camera. I'm not an expert, but I do shoot about every day. With that said, I'll tell you my opinion.

At first the reverse zoom took a bit of time to get used to but with muscle memory, I got that down. Whenever I use the camera inside and need to use the flash on the camera, I get a half moon shadow on the bottom of the picture. At first I didn't know what was causing this but after looking at the size of the lens when in zoom I figured out that the light from the flash is hitting the top of the lens and throwing the shadow. If I install my external flash in the hot shoe (which sits higher than the pop up) I don't get this problem, but I don't always have time for that when I'm just trying to grab a quick shot of my son.

We just got back from a vacation where I used the camera/lens quite a bit and I noticed another tick with it. Sometimes when I press the shutter button halfway down to get the focus ready, I notice that the front lens will seem to slip or drift down. Almost like its about to break completely. It doesn't happen all the time, maybe one out of 50, and so far it is seeming to hold together. Maybe its nothing but its making me nervous and I'm already starting to research another walk around lens.

Would I recommend this to a friend? No. The picture quality is great and if I would have reviewed it right after I bought it I would have gave it 5 stars. But it just doesn't seem to be holding up.

"Decent photos but not great build quality" 2010-01-25
By J. Chatterjee (Columbus, USA)
I am using the lens for about 3 months now. I like the excellent zoom range it offers. It takes decently sharp photo. Image stabilization is OKish, not great though (compared to Sigma and Canon EF lens). The main problems I have with the lens are:

1. Zooming is not smooth. Till about 100mm its OK, but then it takes good jerk/strength to go further.

2. Lens hood is very cheap and "plastic" build and is not smooth to attach and detach.

3. The switch to lock lens creeping is not smooth either.

4. It does not come with a lens pouch or storage box. This is a bit problematic to store the lens when not in use.

"Not Good But Not Bad..." 2009-07-15
By Ken Bailey (Ypsilanti, MI United States)
I bought this lens because I was looking for something a little longer than my 300mm. I wanted to try and get some pictures of wildlife and maybe aircraft. It's not a bad lens for that but there seems to be some aberation if there is alot of light.

The good:

The price. This is not a bad price for this lens.

The length. Gives a pretty decent focal range, so you might actually be able to get some wildlife.

The bad:

It's a pretty bulky lens, especially when it is fully extended.

You can't use auto-focus or auto-exposure with this lens.

It's a pretty good lens for the price. I got some pretty good shots of the moon and some of the wildlife around the park. It has a fixed aperature and F8 to f16 (depending on length) at that, so you are pretty much forced to use the tripod. I'm not sure on some of the lens, but I did notice some distortion in certain lights.

 "Poor quality lens" 2009-06-02
By Scott P. Baker
This lens is of extremely poor quality. I was looking for an affordable telephoto lens to photograph birds, and thought this was the answer. I used the lens for 1 day, then promptly returned it for refund. The lens is too heavy and unbalanced for the standard camera. The quality of the pictures taken with the lens are poor -- blurred and without the detail desired. I would not waste money on this lens.

It easily took pictures of the craters on the full moon at the length of 800mm .....1600 was almost too much LOL

"Great value, works as expected" 2010-02-12
By William Hobbs (Atlanta, GA USA)
Feels well made, quality of the machining looks good. It locks firmly to my Nikon lens (100mm F2.8 E AIS), and attaches well to the Canon body (20D). There is a small amount of rotational play in the connection to the body, but I only notice it when I am looking for it.

As I expected from reading reviews in different places, it is a little thinner than it should be, so it allows the lens to focus a little bit past infinity, but I do not consider it a serious problem.

I was interested in purchasing some older manual focus lenses (specifically the 100mm) because they were significantly cheaper than a modern AF lens with optics of similar quality. For this purpose, the adapter is great. I have read that you can get similar adapters on Ebay for a little less money, but I would much rather stick with the reputation of Amazon and Fotodiox for a few bucks.

If you are in need of an adapter because you cannot get the lens you want in an EOS mount, but you would be spending $500+ on a lens, you might consider a higher quality adapter. For example, my brother has a 5D and several L lenses, and recently bought an anamorphic lens for work in film school. It came with the Fotodiox F to EOS adapter on it, but he will be upgrading to a higher quality adapter, as saving $50-100 on an adapter is not worth even a small sacrifice in quality for what he does.

 "Bad, bad, bad!" 2010-02-03
By Trim Damage (Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada)
I just bought one from Ebay. It costs me only $12. I believe it was made in China. I was so excited to receive it, and eager to try it on my Canon 40D camera with my Nikon AF-S 300mm ED IF lens. It worked poorly --- the image turned out blurred. I was a bit disappointed. I blamed on the poor design. But when I tried to remove the lens from the camera, the adapter and the lens got stuck firmly together. I looked at the adapter and the lens, praying that I could separate the two pieces by hand with all my might, I failed. I started to panic. I said to myself "what a waste (swearing a bit inevitably) --- a cheap $12 third party adapter permanently attaches to a $1000+ beautiful Nikon lens!!!". Next, I used a small screw driver to press on a little black hook that came with the adapter. Fortunately, I managed to separate the adapter from the lens. This lesson teaches me never use a third party product on any camera again. I literally wrote that on the box containing the adapter, fearing that another victim may be trapped. Night mare...I am still sweating...

 "OK for 1 day" 2010-01-30
By George Griffin (NYC)
It did seem too good to be true. Novoflex wants $270 for its adapter. Fotodiox has a "Pro" version ($90) which I've just ordered, thanks to Amazon's returns policy. The problem is the loose fit: tight on the Canon body but loose on all my Nikon lenses. It doesn't bother other users but it's just not acceptable for precision work on a fixed mount or hand-held.

"Lens cap strap [With modification}" 2010-01-07
By Joseph P. Portas (Elbert Colorado)
Works a promised with one exception:

Strap [just a stretchy cord] is too short for a lens longer than a standard lens.

I bought it for my NIKON D90 with 18-105 lens .... worked fine for a while but broke the cord after a month of use.

If the cord were longer I'm sure it would not have broken!

Easy fix ........ I replaced the 'cord' with a much longer 1/8" black ribbon from my wife sewing supplies.

Can remove the metal clip at the 'lens barrel' area with needle nose pliers and the 'dot' decal comes off easy

on the 'cap end' so you can rethread any length cord you want. Just make knots at the cap end and the lens end so

the keeper is secured. Works great ....... no tension on the keeper!

Then again just buy another "Keeper" they are so cheap!

 "So far so good" 2010-01-06
By songalex (Mexico,Mexico)
I purchased two one for a 58mm lenses and one for 77mm lense I was afraid that it breaks when i put it to the bigger lenses so i did with care trying not to open it to much to get inside, also I cleaned the surface with cleaning clothes trying to avoid the loss of sticking.

And so far none of the defectives or quality issues of other reviews have happened, remains one piece, remains attached to the cap keeper.

the cap keeper is cheap, but i leave the cap dangle with no extra care, i put and remove the cap often on my 77mm lenses because i have not buy the protection filter and it remains on good shape, no signs of warning.

"Opteka HD² 0.20X Professional Super AF Fisheye Lens for Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT, XTi, XS, XSi..." 2010-02-23
By J. DEMELO (Boston, MA)
Just received this conversion lens. Like other reviews have said, you get what you pay for. But in this case, this isn't such a bad thing. If you want to have some fun experimenting with a wide angle, fisheye lens before purchasing a 600 to 900 dollar professional option, it's definitely worth it. Fisheye pictures are a bit of a novelty, and the whole fun factor might wear out over time. All the more reason to go with an inexpensive option.

1. I'm not entirely sure why this would matter but the lens is in fact made in China, not Japan. With that being said, I received a solid, well made lens and the glass is crystal clear. I was impressed with the construction. The rubber grips work nicely, and the threads allow the lens to effortlessly and smoothly screw into your lens. It also comes with two adapter rings which allow it to fit anthing from 52 to 58mm. It fits my Canon 18 - 55mm kit lens with the largest of the two adapters. Without either of the two adapters, it fits nicely into my Canon prime f/1.8 50mm lens. It also comes with a mostly worthless cleaning cloth and a small, felt-like pouch to store the lens in when not in use. The pouch was a nice touch.

2. The lens is fairly heavy. While this might feel good when you hold it, I kind of wonder if the weight might affect the "gears" inside my kit lens while the camera is auto-focusing. I can't help but feel like it might add significant strain. Doesn't seem to be an issue so far, but may be worth mentioning. The weight does seem to slow down the auto-focus on my 18-55mm kit lens just slightly... though not enough to really be concerned. I suppose I'll have to see any effects from long term use, but I imagine my Canon lenses are built well enough to handle the extra weight.

3. Nowhere on the lens or box does it say Canon, or for Canon, or XS, XT, XSi, 30D, etc...

With that being said, this lens should fit any camera as long as the lens is between 50mm to 58mm. It should also fit video cameras. It's just a general SLR conversion lens that should fit most lenses with the help of the adapter rings.

4. I don't really understand all of the fuss about the HD aspect of it. If you hold the lens to your eye and look through it like a looking glass, it is remarkably bright and clear and indeed "HD". Otherwise, on the camera it looks just fine. Nothing to rave about.

5. As previous reviews mentioned, when zoomed all the way out you get the full "round" fisheye look. You can see the edge of the lens, but it's a nice effect and fun to use. Zoom in a bit and you get a nice wide angle shot. The edges do appear to fuzz a bit, but I don't see this as a huge issue since it is an inexpensive lens, after all.

All in all, I really look forward to using it more. No regrets with the purchase. Photography is an expensive hobby, and I'm happy there are inexpensive options out there for people who are just looking to try out some different shots.

 "FUN" 2010-02-13
By David (Mountain Home ID.)
It is just an add on and not a true fisheye but it is fun to play with. The pictures turned out fine. Its neat to try new things and at this price it was worth it.

"Great buy for the price" 2010-02-03
By Adelyn Jo Wyngaarden (USA)
For only spending $60, this lens attachment gives great images. Of course, you'd get better pictures with a fisheye lens, but who really wants to spend $700 odd dollars?

 "Fun but not Quality" 2010-01-18
By Neal Fassnacht (nealf)
I just got this for christmas and it is fun to play around with but I was disappointed with how much it affected the quality of the images. It's a cool toy and definitely cheaper than buying a real fish-eye - but you get what pay for and in this case you don't get a sharp image. I would recommend it to someone who just wants to take some shots for fun and isn't worried about having prints made.

"Great value, great photos, fun shooting!" 2010-01-05
By Justin Ryan (Grayslake, IL USA)
I shivered when I saw the prices of fisheye lenses for my Canon XSi until I came across a few of these kind of lenses which instead of integrating into the camera itself, they screw onto the end of the existing lens. This affordable lens takes fantastic wide-angle photos, however there is a pretty extreme barreling effect which I expected after using a 35mm Fisheye by Lomo. I am amazed at the clarity of the photos I have obtained. I was expecting more distortion, chromatic aberration, etc. but this does not seem to be the case with this lens.

Does this compare to a $600 180 degree lens? Probably not. But for someone who isn't using such a lens professionally, this is the perfect starter to get you a taste of what the wide angle can produce.

My ONLY complaint is that the lens cap that came with does not fit with the adapter ring, and so the ring must be removed each time I put the lens away in it's little bag. Nothing serious.

Final thoughts: It's fun, it's cheap, and it produces high quality photos! What more can you ask for?

"You get what you pay for." 2010-01-24
By Raymond Rees (Califonia)
I bought this zoom lens to take pics at Twin Peaks in San Francisco and in the hills of the East Bay. The lens is okay for the price but the quality of the workmanship and of the photos is no way near as good as a name-brand lens that costs 1000s of dollars. Remember, you get what you pay for. If you are like me and cannot afford a lens that costs $1000s then this is a decent alternative.

"Iffy on wether I would buy it again." 2009-12-17
By M. Montana (Darkside, Moon)
I bought this for my wife a while back... She barely uses it, as its normally not clear enough.

The only good picture she got with it, is a full moon, on a tripod, in zero wind, with a remote shutter trigger, with taking over 25 shots to get 1 good one, and only using the 500mm lense, and ditching the doubler.

They just dont make a decent 1000mm lense for under 3k... Period. If you want to play, I guess this would be good for that. The lens Doubler We got with this makes it nearly useless, using the lens as a 500 mm one (removing the doubler) produces tolerable pictures.

If you are looking for high quality shots... either pay 3k, or deal with not getting that shot.

If your looking to just take pictures of things far away, then this is 'ok' for that.

Good for money, not for quality

It is good deal when you compare with money. But, youo cannot expect professional quality. Without tripod, you cannot take good shots!
